MySpace in the Political Scene

One of the formidable campaign tools that Obama owed his victory from is the internet. He reached out through the online community through different social networking sites and one of them is MySpace.

People are more dependent to the internet than ever. Communication lines are often opening online and they are more affordable. With Obama’s MySpace account, people felt closer to Obama and felt like all their concerns are just a message or click away. The online users of MySpace felt secured that their concerns would now be read by the president itself through MySpace.

According to the management of MySpace, Obama’s contender John McCain also maintained a MySpace account however survey shows that after almost a year of online campaigns and discourse 60% of the million of eligible voters on MySpace prefer Obama.

Why is that so?

Above the platforms and the content, it is important to consider the MySpace layout of Obama’s website. Clad in a simple yet personalized royal blue theme, the custom design of his profile page enticed many as it reflects how Obama means serious business devoid of any glittery graffiti that may indicate that he is only fooling around.

With a professional MySpace designer, Obama was able to put up a user-friendly interface and easy to navigate page in MySpace inviting more and more people to spend a minute or two reading his posts regarding his platforms and considering him each and every time people would drop a comment or two.

Of course, it is not at all praises that are welcomed in Obama’s personal space, it’s custom design also made sure that it appears as neutral and that negative feedbacks are very much available. Also, contrary to John McCain’s page, Obama’s page is devoid of video clips and other widgets that may slow down the opening of the page. It was designed in such a way that people would see what he wanted them to see, before their attention span wears out.

Having a customized MySpace layout proves that it could really go you places and Obama is a striking example of that.

Customized Layouts for Political Profiles on MySpace

Social networking, when open to anyone on earth, can hardly remain insulated from the political sphere of life. After all, political affairs top the news stories and bulk of media coverage today. MySpace has hosted online political campaigns supported by experts in using media for political action. The site has been used by political figures for creating profiles that convey their stance on important issues of political nature. Advocates of one or more political figures and/or political views may be interested in joining MySpace and using customized layouts to crate a profile that presents their political preferences.

Surveys about the political activity on MySpace indicate that young people, especially students, are more readily inspired to get involved in online political activism. This coincides with the general observation of young people being more web-savvy and fond of browsing online. Moreover, younger people are good at making more online contacts – a quality that works well for political activism. Individuals and/or groups working on a political profile for MySpace may need some degree of professional customization so as to harmonize their layouts with the trend in the respective niche. This in turn means hiring the services of not just any web designer but one who is at home in creating custom MySpace layouts.

Two important points are to remember while creating customized MySpace layouts for a political profile on the site. First, MySpace profiles should not aim at starting or running entire political campaigns. Instead, they should be used as complementary participation which is part of an already running political activity. Ideally, these MySpace layouts are good for linking back on other websites. Secondly, a political profile should be customized to the local as against national/global appeal that the owner has on his/her mind. Generally, local contacts are more responsive than distant ones. The profile should, therefore, be designed with more local flair.

MySpace is a good place for showing political support to a candidate, party, or ideology. It can also serve as a platform for organizing people about rights and responsibilities and better playing one’s role towards a higher goal. In addition, it is a social platform for raising funds to make political reforms. To attain these aims, the profile owner must have a notable number of active contacts. Customized MySpace layouts serve as invitation cards that attract and drive online traffic to the profile owner’s activity.
